Most people who work in insurance only see their part of it. A claims officer sees claims. A new starter sees a system. Few can explain how pricing, claims, reinsurance and capital fit together, or why one hailstorm changes decisions for years. Induction decks list the terms. They rarely make the connections stick.
Underwritten is a strategy game that puts the player in charge of Harbour & Range, a fictional Australian home and motor insurer. Over 12 quarters they respond to events, set prices, decide who to insure, choose how claims are handled and buy reinsurance. Then they see what happened: a quarter report, a plain-English explanation from an advisor and a new card in their playbook. Storms, bushfires and floods arrive without warning, so every decision has consequences. No login. No install. Works on a phone.
Live. Built by RETSA Group with Claude Opus 5.5. Public at underwritten.netlify.app. The simulation was tested across 400 simulated games per strategy. Sensible play survives. Skipping reinsurance, or chasing growth with cheap prices, usually ends with the regulator stepping in. Those failures are the lessons. By the end, a player can explain loss ratio, combined ratio, adverse selection, reinsurance and solvency, and how each affects the others.
A focused serious game, not a learning platform. The design choices are instructional ones:
Claude Opus 5.5 did the building. Learning design decided what to teach, in what order and what to leave out.
